Wacken Metal Market
Can a temporary retail building be circular and temporary with minimum impact?
The Circular Metal Market rethinks retail architecture as an adaptable system rather than a permanent object. Developed for the Wacken Open Air festival, the building responds to the temporary nature of the event while creating a robust and welcoming destination for visitors.
Natural materials, generous openings, and a flexible interior layout create a calm and durable environment that contrasts with the intensity of the festival setting. The result is an architecture that is simultaneously practical, scalable, and human-centered. With the use of the micro-modular TRIQBRIQ system, Beta Realities designs a temporary building solution for zero impact. The market itself can be assembled and re-assembled in different configurations for unique temporary use cases.

A New Generation of Festival Retail.
At festivals, retail infrastructure is often treated as a temporary necessity. The Circular Metal Market challenges this assumption by positioning the supermarket as an active part of the visitor experience. Beyond supplying everyday goods, the market becomes a place of orientation, exchange, and interaction. An activated entrance zone extends the building into the public realm, creating opportunities for information, events, and community engagement. The supermarket becomes more than a point of sale—it becomes a meeting point within the festival ecosystem.

Adaptive spatial planning.
The flexible spatial organization supports changing operational needs, seasonal adaptations, and future uses. By combining logistical efficiency with spatial quality, the project demonstrates how retail architecture can contribute to the identity and experience of a temporary city.

The Market as a Stage.
With its design the Wacken Metal Market integrates an interactive stage, therefore becoming a festival attraction in itself. Various bands and acts can play on the front porch of the retailer. The market seamlessly integrates into the festival fabric.
A New Circular Approach.
The project is conceived from the outset as a material bank. Every component is selected and assembled according to principles of reversibility, reuse, and future adaptability. Built with the TRIQBRIQ timber construction system, the structure can be assembled without permanent connections and disassembled without material loss. Walls, floors, façades, and roof elements are designed as recoverable layers that retain their value beyond the first lifecycle of the building. Rather than minimizing waste at the end of use, the project eliminates the concept of waste altogether. Materials remain resources, components remain assets, and the building becomes part of a continuous circular process. This approach transforms temporary construction from a linear consumption model into a regenerative system.

Temporary Markets - The Future of Retail.
Temporary architecture often operates within a contradiction: significant resources are invested into structures designed for short-term use. The Circular Metal Market proposes an alternative model. Designed for rapid assembly and disassembly, the building can be deployed, relocated, and reconfigured multiple times without compromising architectural quality. Its modular system allows adaptation to different sites, capacities, and operational scenarios, extending its relevance far beyond a single event. The project demonstrates that temporary buildings do not need to be disposable. By combining modular construction, circular material flows, and long-term adaptability, the Circular Metal Market establishes a new framework for event architecture—one where temporary use and permanent value coexist.
