Sachsenbrücke Grasbrok
What if a bridge becomes a sustainable social hub?
The Sachsenbrücke is conceived as a precise and elegant urban building block — a defining element in the development of the Grasbrook.
Connecting transport infrastructure with open-space systems, establishes a flood-resilient link, and simultaneously acts as a public realm. The design unites technical excellence with strong architectural presence, embodying a holistic approach to sustainability: climate-conscious, economically efficient, durable, and consistently high in quality. The bridge is envisioned as an urban promenade — a place for movement and for lingering. On the northern side, the cross-section widens to incorporate a continuous seating bench, inviting people to pause and enjoy panoramic views. The bastions are designed as staggered “Elbe balconies,” creating layered connections between bridge, waterfront, and landscape. Underpasses provide fully accessible pedestrian and cycling links, while the formerly solid embankment walls are transformed into articulated, publicly usable spaces with generous seating steps.

A New Urban Continuity.
The ensemble re-stitches a long-fragmented site into Prague’s urban fabric, mediating between historic city blocks and contemporary infrastructure. Varied volumes and articulated corners establish a legible city edge, while warm sandstone tones and refined detailing ground the architecture in local tradition, ensuring a confident yet respectful civic presence.

Blending Public Life and Everyday Living.
The ground floor activates the public realm with flexible shops, cafés, and terraced staircases, seamlessly connecting residences to the city. Organic pathways lead into the central courtyard, where playful zones, amphitheater seating, and shaded gathering spots blend daily life with greenery, fostering community, leisure, and a tranquil urban retreat.

A Layered Landscape of Everyday Rituals.
At the heart of the ensemble, a timber pavilion anchors a lush, layered garden, surrounded by climbing greenery, flowering shrubs, and deep-soil planting. Winding paths, intimate seating, and playful nooks create a serene, immersive retreat, blending everyday life with nature while fostering informal social interaction and seasonal activity.
A Cohesive City Piece.
Read as a whole, the block balances permanence and adaptability. Unified by a clear architectural order yet rich in variation, it frames streets and courtyards with equal care. Active edges, calm inner façades, and a human-scaled rhythm transform a former brownfield into a lasting, livable neighborhood.

Elevated Communal Living.
The roofscape extends the courtyard into a layered, shared landscape above the city. Private terraces and communal gardens are interwoven with native planting, pergolas, and social stairs that double as seating. Shaded pavilions frame city views, creating a vibrant yet balanced environment for everyday rituals, gathering, and retreat.
Expressive and Contextual Frontages.
The façades balance unity and identity through a tripartite structure of plinth, body, and crown. Vertically segmented corners animate the north–south fronts, tonal gradients address east–west elevations, and calmer courtyard façades link green walls to the lush interior, creating a cohesive, elegant, and contextually sensitive city presence.
